Um, you can tell any child the truth about nature, no matter how old they are. “They have feathers because feathers help birds fly, stay warm, stay dry, etc.”

I hate how adults think they have to dumb things down for inquisitive kids. My 6-year-old nephew asks these kinds of questions all the time and it leads to really cool 10-minute conversations… instead of abruptly and awkwardly ending after 10 seconds. Answering with the truth means that he will continue to explore how and why the world is the way it is… instead of blindly accepting whatever unsatisfying answers he will come across.
