    …But the lion was a politician. L. Frank Baum used the lion’s characteristics to portray William Jennings Bryan, the cowardly US anti-imperialist candidate of 1900. Republicans, such as Teddy Roosevelt whom of which represents the wizard, mocked Bryan for being cowardly and indecisive.
