Well it is wrong, I mean sure some undereducated people maybe know just few US states, but most of us knows more about USA then you might think.
More important question you should ask yourself is how US people see Europe I honestly believe it is much worse in that case I have a good friend living in states and we actually had this conversation and he said that mostly people know that France, Germanny, GB and Italy exist but I doubt they could place them on map properly But that is pretty much it.
